Urban traffic control (UTC) systems aim at enabling safe and efficient passing of the ever increasing road traffic flows at intersections and elsewhere. This requires determining the situation on the roads.
Emerging cooperative techniques like vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication increase the estimation accuracy of the traffic situation and open new channels for delivering information to traffic participants.
However, most cooperative applications require large penetration rates in order to assure their functionality, making the first steps towards their deployment unattractive.
The COLOMBO Idea: overcoming this hurdle by delivering a set of modern, self-organizing traffic management components being applicable even at penetration rates below 10%, asserting their usability from the very beginning of deployment on.
The COLOMBO working objectives:
•Deliver proven traffic management algorithms for traffic surveillance and advanced traffic light control components.
•Extend and implement well-established simulation software for vehicular pollutant emissions (PHEM), traffic (SUMO), and vehicular communication (iTETRIS and ns-3).
Cost-efficiency and the reduction of vehicular emissions were the project’s key targets.
The necessary research was structured in five work packages, supported by result dissemination and project management.
COLOMBO started at 1st of November 2012 and ended at 31st of October 2015.
