Mobility of people and goods are fundamental prerequisites for livable, climate-robust and competitive cities and their surrounding areas. At the same time, the negative consequences of the resulting traffic in terms of air and noise pollution, the design and distribution of urban space as well as traffic safety are major challenges for achieving climate targets in the transport sector and creating attractive, livable places. Livable places are climate and environmentally friendly, resource-efficient, equitable, inclusive, and safe, and in the long term enable a high quality of mobility and life, good accessibility, and ensure mobility participation for all. Their emergence requires a systemic transformation of mobility, considering new mobility offers, urban structures, political and social framework conditions, and individual behavioral changes.
Solution Modules for Livable Places
With the VMo4Orte research project, we offer solution modules that can be used to contribute to the transformation of the transport system. To this end, we are conducting targeted research across several areas and starting from a systemic perspective that is underpinned by our interdisciplinary expertise:
The solution modules range from researching and further developing
• intermodal transport networks and nodes,
• digital mobility management and navigation services,
• user-oriented business models for mobility concepts,
• new complete vehicle concepts for road and rail,
• redesign and mobility concepts for people and logistics in urban areas
• to the economic evaluation of these and the derivation of political measures to advise future transformation strategies.
This is done with a view to inclusive and diversity-oriented mobility requirements for passenger and goods transportation systems. The individual solution modules are then integrated into cross-cutting mobility concepts for urban spaces in neighborhoods, cities or regions and further developed in practical applications with the participation of stakeholders. The overarching question of the research project is to investigate how the cross-sectoral interaction of the solution modules for mobility and logistics concepts can succeed in a joint and transformative dialog with stakeholders so that livable, climate resilient and competitive places can be designed in the long term.
Transferability and practical relevance through demonstrators
A total of six demonstrators will be tested in the project to transfer the mobility concepts, some of which are experimental and practice-oriented, and their solution modules from the various application and research areas. For subsequent application and transfer to real-life conditions, it is important to integrate the mobility needs and requirements of both the population and stakeholders such as transportation companies, public institutions and municipalities as well as companies from the mobility and logistics sector. For example, in the "Mobilitätswende vor Ort" demonstrator, redesign measures in a neighborhood are being considered together with stakeholders with a view to changes in noise pollution, area allocation of transport services, transport demand and the effects of future integration of new mobility services and vehicle concepts. In dialogue with the population, municipal administrations and transport companies as well as tradesmen, solution approaches for a potential implementation are jointly developed and tested. These solutions ensure the transfer of individual needs and company-specific and municipal requirements into transferable and scalable applications in regional practice. They also serve as customizable templates for further applications. Detailed descriptions of the individual demonstrators are presented on the subpages of the subprojects.

VMo4Orte is funded from DLR's own resources. 19 DLR institutes and research facilities are involved. The project is led by the Institute of Transport Research. The work is carried out in four closely linked subprojects (SP). Each of the four subprojects is headed by a subproject manager.
